Welcome. We're glad you're considering the opportunity of membership at Torrey Pines Christian Church.
For those who choose Torrey Pines as their spiritual home, we invite and encourage membership-a commitment and connection to our church family.
For us-and for you, we hope-membership at Torrey Pines means uniting with others who believe in Jesus Christ and who desire to live, learn and grow in faith. A personal commitment of faith in Jesus Christ is an important first step in becoming a member.
The second step to becoming a member at Torrey Pines is to attend the Inquirer's Class offered periodically throughout the year. However, this class is also a good way to learn about our church. At the end of class you'll have the opportunity to join as a member if you choose. A meeting with our Lead Pastor is an alternative to attending the Inquirer's class.
The more you get involved at Torrey Pines Christian Church, the more you'll experience how our faith in Christ shapes what we do. If you're looking for a church home-a place to belong and a place to grow-we hope you'll join us!
Frequently asked questions about membership
As you consider membership, you may be asking these common questions ...
What does it mean to become a member of Torrey Pines?
Membership at Torrey Pines Christian Church involves a mutual commitment within this local gathering of Christ-followers. It is a bi-directional pledge between you and the church.
When you identify yourself with Torrey Pines, you are making a commitment to participate in the work of Christ through this local body. You are joining in Torrey Pines' particular purpose and vision, which contribute to the larger story of God's people all over the world.
And conversely, we stand committed to lead you in truth and direct you toward maturity, as you serve as a devoted follower of Christ.
What is expected of a member?
God desires for all Christ-followers to make a personal contribution of time, talent and treasure. Much like the pieces of a puzzle, all of our efforts fit together to create a complete church, well rounded and effective in ministry.
When it comes to contributing time and talent, we seek to help each member find a place of service that fulfills their unique blend of talents, interests, personality and experience. Volunteer postings can be found online within the "Get Connected" section or in our publications.
Your personal investment of treasure is important, too. Not only for your own spiritual wealth, but for all the ministries of Torrey Pines Christian Church, which are fully funded by this congregation. We'll be glad to provide current budget and financial information upon request. For additional information about giving, please see our website section called "Giving."
Is there an age minimum for church membership?
We prefer that a young person be at least 12 years of age before joining as a member. As children mature, they become aware of their need for God. When they recognize that they are personally responsible to the call of Christ, they have sound reason to seek a commitment to the church.
Through our children's ministry, Torrey Kids and Torrey Youth, we have the precious opportunity to create a lasting imprint on young hearts and minds as they learn about Jesus Christ. To further encourage their learning, we offer programs such as Making Disciples. Children are partnered with a mentor so that they can participate in the spiritual development process and help determine when formal membership would be an appropriate step.
What is the status of members' children?
We consider the congregation to be a family, and therefore we are committed to supporting the development of the families that make up this congregation. Through age 17, children are considered to be members as long as at least one parent maintains a membership. Members' children receive the same commitment from the church as do adult members in terms of our care for them and our intention to see them grow in their love for God.
At age 18, members' children may continue as members in their own right by affirming their desire to join, if they have not done so previously.
